Dec. 6, 2024: ProperData hosted Emily Wenger, for a seminar talk titled, “Reclaiming Data Agency in the Age of Ubiquitous Machine Learning”. The seminar was hosted in virtual format on zoom. A recording of the talk is available on our page [Seminar Series].

Oct. 27 – Oct. 29, 2024: ProperData hosted our fourth Annual Symposium from Oct. 27-29, 2024 at the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Lodge. The Symposium brought together ProperData faculty, students, and invited guests for discussion and brainstorming sessions. [ProperData 4th Symposium]

June 23 – June 28, 2024: We hosted our fourth summer program at UC Irvine in June for 24 high school students. For 2024, we adapted our curriculum specifically for a high school population and expanded it to go beyond Privacy and IoT (Raspberry Pi and voice assistants) to provide an in-depth overview of python programming and to include Artificial Intelligence (training on ChatGPT), through a combination of lectures and hands-on projects. June, 17 2024: Funded by a Samueli donation, to further strengthen the ties between the two UCLA and UCI Samueli Schools of Engineering, we hosted a one-day joint UCI-UCLA workshop on Privacy at UC Irvine in June. We invited engineering faculty, as well as privacy policy and law experts from both UCI and UCLA, to attend. The goal of this workshop was to identify teams with common interests, facilitate collaborations, and lead to faculty pursuing funding opportunities. [UCI+UCLA Engineering Privacy Workshop]

May 23, 2024: Join the Society of Graduate Electrical Engineers & Computer Scientists (GEECS) and the Women in Cyber Security (WiCyS) for their 2024 Academic Development Workshop! This workshop is designed to help graduate students thrive academically in their graduate programs and to learn about academic career paths, such as postdocs and faculty positions. May 17, 2024: ProperData will host Oana Goga, for a seminar talk titled, “Measuring and mitigating risks with online advertising and micro-targeting”. Jan 30, 2024: The UCI WiCyS chapter, hosted UCI EECS graduate student Joann Chen for her talk on “Envisioning the Future of Digital Privacy: Bridging Theory and Practice in Differential Privacy”. Oct 26, 2023: The UCI WiCyS chapter, hosted a Security & Privacy Research Mixer for undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning more about cybersecurity and privacy research being conducted at UCI. [WiCyS Event Page]

Fall 2023: ProperData is launching our Privacy Frontiers Seminar Series this Fall. The seminars will take place on the first Friday of every month and the format will be hybrid or on zoom. Sept. 18 – Sept. 19, 2023: ProperData hosted our third Annual Symposium on Sept. 18-19, 2023, in Boston at the Northeastern University campus. The Symposium brought together ProperData faculty, students, and invited guests from industry and the government and policy sector. [ProperData 3rd Symposium]

June 20 – June 30, 2023: ProperData hosted our third Privacy and IoT Research Exploration Workshop in-person at UC Irvine for 17 community college students. Program curriculum built on our previous program and included hands on experiences programming a Raspberry Pi (RPi) microcomputer, network traffic monitoring analysis, and trained students on how to build a voice assistance device from scratch. A new module on advertising, tracking, and profiling in the TikTok environment was delivered. [2023 Workshop]

Mar. 31 – Apr. 1, 2023: In “Beyond the FTC: The Future of Privacy Enforcement“, law and computer science scholars from across the country will identify and propose solutions to barriers that inhibit enforcement of privacy rights. PIs Hartzog, Jordan, Choffnes, Markopoulou, and Shafiq will speak on how regulators can use privacy research to improve tech accountability. [Event Page]

Dec. 1 – 2, 2022: ProperData hosted our second Annual Symposium on December 1-2, 2022, at our UC Irvine campus. The Symposium brought together ProperData faculty, students, and invited guests from the industry and policy sectors and was combined with an NSF Site Visit. [ProperData 2nd Symposium]

June 20 – July 1, 2022: ProperData hosted our second Privacy and IoT Research Exploration Workshop in-person at UC Irvine for 18 undergraduates. The focus of our curriculum was on smart speakers and how voice assistant interaction data is used for ad tracking and targeting. Students received hands on training on network traffic collection and web crawling and built their own voice assistant device from scratch utilizing a Raspberry Pi microcomputer. [2022 Workshop]

May 6, 2022: ProperData, PI Markopoulou, and our student advisee group, UCI WiCyS, participated in hosting the National Academy of Engineering’s EngineeringGirl Ambassadors on their visit to the UCI Henry Samueli School of Engineering.

May 3, 2022: Our student advisee group, the UCI Chapter of WiCyS, hosted their first in-person social event of 2022. This student organization works to promote careers and opportunities for women in the fields of security and privacy. [WiCyS Event Page]

Apr. 13, 2022: Our two SATC Frontier projects (SPLICE and ProperData) hosted a joint virtual workshop. The focus of the workshop was on smart IoT home devices and the new privacy and security threats, including national-security ones, arising from their rapidly increasing integration into consumer lives. Our panelists discussed the law, policy, and national concerns of these devices, in addition to the intersecting technical privacy and security aspects of IoT devices. Nov. 4-5, 2021: The first ProperData Annual Symposium was be hosted on Nov. 4-5, 2021. The event was hosted in-person at UC Irvine, with options for remote participation. The Symposium brought together ProperData faculty, students, advisors as well as invited speakers from the industry and policy sectors. [ProperData Symposium]
Apr. 2021: The Research Exploration Workshop on Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Privacy aims to broaden the participation among underrepresented groups in cybersecurity research, including women, Latinx/Hispanics, Blacks/African Americans, Native Americans, persons with disabilities, and those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Nov. 2020: ProperData Kickoff. A 3-hour event across all four institutions, faculty, students, and advisors to kickoff the ProperData project.
Oct. 2020: A virtual workshop on the privacy aspects of (digital) contact tracing. The workshop brought together participants with technical background (security and privacy, networking, user interfaces), as well as policy expertise (data protection, disease surveillance and other information-related aspects of public health).
