Privacy, IoT & AI Research Exploration Program 4

2024 Privacy, IoT & AI Summer Program

The ProperData center will offer our signature “Privacy, IoT & AI” program this summer, June 23 – June 28, 2024, at the UCI campus. The program is organized and taught by ProperData faculty, researchers and staff, in collaboration with UCI’s Office of Outreach, Access and Inclusion. This year’s summer program is addressed to high school students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s in computer science, computer engineering, data science or related field. Participants will be introduced to the fields of privacy, security, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI), through a combination of lectures and hands-on projects. Opportunities for career development and postsecondary education preparation will also be provided.

This is the 4th in our series of “Privacy & IoT” research exploration workshops. Information about past programs can be found here. This year we have implemented two changes. First, we evolved the curriculum beyond Privacy and IoT (e.g., projects with Raspberry Pi, python programming, and build-your-own voice assistant), to also include concepts from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and hands-on projects with chatGPT, to highlight the applications and threats from generative AI (highlighting voice and speech technologies, as well as the use of language models). Second, we modified the curriculum to be addressed to high school (as opposed to undergraduate) students. Career development opportunities include undergraduate student panels, workshops on undergraduate admissions and college preparation, and networking opportunities with UCI faculty, graduate students, and scientists.

Requirements: The application is open to rising 10th, 11th or 12th graders, with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA. No prior experience in CS is required to participate. Students must be available to attend (and commute to campus) for the duration of the program. Our program is for any student interested in exploring an education or careers in computer science (or a related field). Students from underrepresented groups in STEM (such as women, Latinx/Hispanics, Black/African Americans, Native Americans, people with disabilities, and people of low socioeconomic status) are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application: Apply here, by April 7th (for maximum consideration). For any questions please contact properdata@uci.edu.

FAQs

Any high school student who will be a rising 10th, 11th, or 12th grader in the Fall of 2024 who holds a minimum 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA.

Please keep in mind that our curriculum will be accessible, challenging, and rewarding for all applicants and selected participants. No prior knowledge/experience in computer science is required. If you are interested in exploring CS as an education/career option this program will provide you with an opportunity to explore the field and develop basic coding and programming skills. If you are a student with some (or even a moderate amount) of experience in CS, this program will add to your skillet by exposing you to research methods, skills, and networking opportunities within the subfields of privacy and IoT in CS.

The Privacy, IoT & AI summer program is a one week, commuter program* at the UCI campus. Selected participants are expected to attend all workdays (M-F) from the hours of 9am – 4pm. Every day our schedule will consist of 5-6 hours of academic curriculum covering computer science that can take the form of a class or individual/group work. Academic curriculum will include hands on exercises in CS programming and ChatGPT modules while working with a Raspberry PI microcomputer. The rest of the program schedule will include post-secondary education preparation programming: admissions workshops, undergraduate panels, and campus tours.

Please note that we will hold ahalf day session on Sunday, June 23rd. Attendance will be required for program orientation and team building activities needed for group assignments.

*commuter program: participants will need to arrive to campus each day on their own. It will be required for students to be dropped off and picked up by designated contacts at designated locations and times; see more under dropoff/pickup.

Lunch, snacks, and refreshments will be provided daily.

Our program will be unable to provide housing accommodations this year. If you do not live in the Irvine or OC area, but can arrive to campus each day by 9am, we would be happy to have you be a participant in our program.

No. Selected participants are expected to attend each day. As students will work in teams, missing any day will impact your team’s progress and ability to work on program deliverables: academic posters and presentations. Please do not accept a spot in the program if you cannot attend the full week; we would like to extend this opportunity to as many students who can commit to a full time attendance.

The program is completely free, there is no cost to selected participants. Our program is fully funded by the National Science Foundation through our SaTC Frontier center (ProperData) at UCI.

Our application link and full instructions are available here. For maximum consideration, please fill out and submit your application before or on April 7, 2024 Sunday April 21, 2024 (extended) by 11:59pm PT.

Applications will be reviewed in the month of April. Decisions should be release by the end of the month.

This is an independent UCI summer program and is separate from the official campus admissions process. All UCI admissions are handled by the Office of Admissions, for more information please visit https://www.admissions.uci.edu/apply/index.php.
