Privacy and IoT Research Exploration Workshop 3

Summer 2023: For Community College Students
Tuesday June 20, 2023 – Friday June 30, 2023, 9:00am-3pm ISEB 4020

2023 Privacy and IoT Research Exploration Workshop

ProperData hosted our third Privacy and IoT Research Exploration Workshop in the summer of 2023 from June 20 – June 30. Theprogram took place at the UCI campus, Monday- Friday, and was a collaborative effort between SaTC Frontier faculty, graduate students, staff and UCI’s Office of Access and Inclusion. The program curriculum covered fundamentals in computer science and also exposed participants to research conducted by Frontier members, in particular research related to smart speakers and voice assistants and potential tracking and profiling of social media app users (e.g TikTok).

The program was established to expose community college students to the field of computer science and introduce them to the following research areas within CS: internet of things (IoT), privacy, security, mobile systems, and networking. Our participants will interact with top faculty and researchers in these fields, will gain hands-on experience in programming and privacy and security research methods, and will have the opportunity to participate in career development and networking activities. A few of the activities we have provided in our past workshops include faculty, industry, and graduate student panels, workshops on undergraduate research and graduate school admissions, and industry lunches and visits. As our student population will be made up of current community college students this year, we will also have programming focused on support for transferring to a four year institution.

The ProperData SaTC Frontier is committed to and aims to engage and recruit undergraduates from underrepresented groups such as women, Latinx/Hispanics, Black/African Americans, Native Americans, people with disabilities, and people of low socioeconomic status in our workshops. We highly encourage students in these populations to apply. Likewise, our program is for any student interested in exploring an education or careers in computer science (or a related field). Zero experience is required to apply or participate in this summer workshop.

FAQs

Any student who is currently enrolled at a California Community College (or will enroll for their first semester in Fall 23; e.g high school seniors) and plans to return in the Fall of 2023 is eligible to apply. Priority will be given to community college students, but undergraduates at a 4-yr institution (UCI, USC, etc.) will be considered.

Please keep in mind that our curriculum will be accessible, challenging, and rewarding for all applicants and selected participants. No prior knowledge/experience in computer science is required. If you are interested in exploring CS as an education/career option this program will provide you with an opportunity to explore the field and develop basic skills. If you are a student with some (or even a moderate amount) of experience in CS, this program will add to your skillet by exposing you to research methods, skills, and networking opportunities within the privacy and IoT speciality of CS.

The Privacy and IoT Workshop is a two week commuter program* (Monday – Friday only) at the UCI campus. Selected participants are expected to attend all days from the hours of 9am – 3pm. Every day our schedule will consist of 5-6 hours of academic curriculum covering computer science that can take the form of a class or individual/group work. Academic curriculum will include hands on exercises in CS research methods and programming. The rest of the program schedule will include professional and career development programming: educational workshops, career panels, industry visits, and lab tours.

*commuter program: participants will need to arrive to campus each day on their own. Lunch and refreshments will be provided daily.

Due to the university residential halls summer schedule, we will be unable to provide housing accommodations this year. If you do not live in the Irvine area, but can arrive to campus each day by 9am, we would be happy to have you be a participant in our program.

No. Selected participants are expected to attend each day. As students will work in teams, missing any day will impact your team’s progress and ability to work on program deliverables: academic posters and presentations.

The program is completely free (at no cost to selected participants) and is funded by the National Science Foundation through our SaTC Frontier center at UCI.

Our application link and full instructions are available here. For maximum consideration, please fill out and submit your application before or on April 7, 2023 by 11:59pm PT.

Applications will be reviewed in the month of April. Decisions should be release by the end of the month.

This is an independent UCI program and is separate from the admissions process. All UCI admissions are handled by the Office of Admissions, for more information please visit https://www.admissions.uci.edu/apply/index.php.
