2024 Summer Program on Privacy, IoT & AI
Summer 2024: For High School Students
Sunday June 23, 2024 – Friday June 28, 2024, 9:00am-4pm ISEB 1200
2024 Privacy, IoT & AI Summer Program
The ProperData center offered our signature “Privacy, IoT & AI” program this summer, June 23 – June 28, 2024, at the UCI campus. The program was organized and taught by ProperData faculty, researchers and staff, in collaboration with UCI’s Office of Outreach, Access and Inclusion. This year’s summer program was addressed to high school students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s in computer science, computer engineering, data science or a related field. Participants were introduced to the fields of privacy, security, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI), through a combination of lectures and hands-on projects. Opportunities for career development and postsecondary education preparation were also provided.
This was the 4th in our series of “Privacy & IoT” research exploration workshops. Information about past programs can be found here. In 2024 we implemented two changes. First, we evolved the curriculum beyond Privacy and IoT (e.g., projects with Raspberry Pi, python programming, and build-your-own voice assistant), to also include concepts from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and hands-on projects with chatGPT, to highlight the applications and threats from generative AI (highlighting voice and speech technologies, as well as the use of language models). Second, we modified the curriculum to be addressed to high school (as opposed to undergraduate) students. Career development opportunities included undergraduate student panels, workshops on undergraduate admissions and college preparation, and networking opportunities with UCI faculty, graduate students, and scientists.
Requirements: The application was open to rising 10th, 11th or 12th graders, with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA. No prior experience in CS is required to participate. Students must be available to attend (and commute to campus) for the duration of the program. Our program is for any student interested in exploring an education or careers in computer science (or a related field). Students from underrepresented groups in STEM (such as women, Latinx/Hispanics, Black/African Americans, Native Americans, people with disabilities, and people of low socioeconomic status) are particularly encouraged to apply.
Application: Apply here, by April 7th (for maximum consideration). For any questions please contact properdata@uci.edu.
