Policy-Relevant Privacy Research (PR2) Workshop at PETS 2025

ProperData PIs, David Choffnes (Northeastern), Athina Markopoulou (UC Irvine), and Zubair Shafiq (UC Davis), co-organized the inaugural workshop Policy-Relevant Privacy Research (PR2), which took place on Monday, July 14, 2025, as part of the 25th Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium (PETS), in Washington, DC. The goal was to bring together privacy researchers trained in computer science and engineering, with experts in privacy policy and law, to explore how to work together to support tech accountability.

The workshop was well attended by over 60 people, working on privacy at the interface of both technology and policy. The program included a keynote(by Jonathan Mayer), a panel (with Seth Frotman, Jules Polonetsky, and Laura Edelson), lightning intros, and brainstorming during two rounds of breakouts. More information can be found on the PR2 website.

Thank you to all who participated and contributed. The overwhelming feedback after the workshop was that people are interested in making PR2 a regular event and creating a community around it. Stay tuned for future iterations of PR2 in the coming years, and feel free to contact us (at properdata-at-uci-dot-edu) if you want to get involved.
