ProperData members delivered three presentations between the 43rd IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (S&P) and the 6th Workshop on Technology and Consumer Protection (ConPro), co-located with S&P.

Graduate student author Sashidhar Jakkamsetti (UC Irvine) presented “Privacy-from-Birth: Protecting Sensed Data from Malicious Sensors with VERSA”. This research is led by Ivan De Oliveira Nunes (Rochester Institute of Technology), in collaboration with Co-PI Tsudik’s group. Verified Remote Sensing Authorization (VERSA) is a secure and formally verified architecture to protect sensed data from birth (PfB). [YouTube Recording]

Our Northeastern group presented two papers at ConPro ’22. Graduate student Ali Muhammad (Northeastern University) presented “All Things Unequal: Measuring Disparity of Potentially Harmful Ads on Facebook”. The paper measures the prevalence of potentially harmful advertisements on Facebook, as well as whether there are biases in how the advertising system delivers them. This is collaborative work within Co-PI Mislove’s group.

While research scientist Piotr Sapiezynski (Northeastern) presented “Algorithms that Don’t See Color”: Measuring Biases in Lookalike and Special Ad Audiences”. The paper examines the discriminatory effects that can result even when sensitive demographic inputs are removed from real-world algorithm systems, specifically by testing Facebook algorithms. Congratulations to Piotr and team for being awarded Best Paper Runner Up for this work. This is also collaborative work within Co-PI Mislove’s group.
